Leaf cutting is a good way to apply an old surface to a piece of furniture using another piece of timber with the correct timber match / level of pattination etc.

I have a large band saw which has a throat of 28”. I can get 3 or 4 veneers out of a leaf (dependant on how thick and wide the leaf is and how bowed it is)

Eg: a 28” leaf would onlycut into 2 veneers.
Eg. a 24“or 25” leaf could make 3 veneers (if the leaf is narrower you could get 4)

Veneers can be sanded or in the rough.  The sander width is a maximum of 24”, the thinnest veneer would be 1/16” & the waste from the blade is roughly 1/16”. I can arrange for veneers to be laminated onto hard wood or ply for dining tables. I can also cut new timber into veneers.

Eg: a block of timber measuring 8” x 45” x 2 ¼” could make 10 veneers.

Price:

It costs approximately £120 to cut a leaf in half and £160 to cut 3 or 4 veneers (These processes vary on the density of timber and how wide the leaves are).

There is a charge if I hit nails or screws with the blade.

It is possible to post leaves via parcel force – if you weigh the leaf they will come and collect it from you.

FAQ‘s:

The veneers will have the marks from the table catches, screws and screw holes from where the table top is attached. I can cut marks out of the edge ie. Location pins. 2 component filler is a quick easy way to fill holes and can be hidden in the polishing. Alternatively I can patch with offcuts of veneer.

Because the veneers are applied to Cepele (or whichever timber you select) the leaves may bow.

I can veneer on both sides, with cut veneer or new veneer (new veneer on underside). Or I can veneer on ply, tipping the edges and veneering both sides to even the pulling. Or the easiest way (which is normally done) is to fit bearers; this works well.
