Mid 20th century bell jar Hundi hall light 11"
This bell jar Hundi light has a glass hat to the top with a brass section. There is a brass ring around the main glass section with three shaped hooks. Three chains are suspended from these hooks and the main body of the light hangs from these. The glass dome is held to these chains with a brass ring featuring c-scrolls. This piece has three small bayonet bulb holders. The width of the glass bowl without the chain holder is 22 cm. The drop from the hat to the body is 17 cm.
This style of glass lamps are known in India as Hundis or Handis and were originally made in Europe and exported to India as lighting for large homes and palaces in the 19th century. Candles or oil lamps were placed inside the glass bell and the glass lid prevented soot from marking the ceiling.
This would have always been electric.
