How to choose a chandelier

Scale and Size: Make sure the chandelier is proportional to the size of the room and the space where it will hang. Too small, and it might feel out of place; too large, and it could overwhelm the room (unless you are going for a maximalist vibe!).

Style: Choose a chandelier that complements the overall style of the room. We feel that mixing old with new works really well, so this isn't a consideration. But do you think a bag chandelier, a spike or a mid century works best?

Height: Make sure the chandelier hangs at an appropriate height. In dining rooms, it should be around 30-36 inches above the table. In other areas, make sure it’s not so low that it feels intrusive or unsafe.

Functionality: Consider whether you need a chandelier to provide ambient lighting, task lighting, or simply as a decorative element. You might want dimmable options or shades for flexibility.

Most importantly: Don't decorate your house for other people. What do YOU love and want to look at for years to come!?

How to hang a chandelier

All of our lighting has been re-wired and tested but will need to be installed by a qualified electrician.

All lighting comes with a length of wire - the electrician can fix this to the wire from your ceiling or wall.

You will usually need a rose and chain. You can buy these from our website. Link below. Length of chain will determine how low or high your chandelier will hang. Please see the "what size do I need" FAQ below for more information on sizing.

When chandeliers really work

Anywhere is our answer... but then, we even have them in our downstairs loo!

Chandeliers are adaptable and make an immediate impression, adding texture and depth. They help create visual interest while obviously, providing ample lighting.

Adding opulence and glamour, they also compliment modern decor by bringing a sense of luxury.

What size do I need?

This is one of the most popular questions we get. Usually people post sales, wished they'd chosen a bigger one.

In dining rooms, it should hang around 30-36 inches above the table. In other areas, make sure it’s not so low that it feels intrusive or unsafe.

You can adjust the height with different lengths of chain (available on our website) and sometimes I can make bag chandeliers shorter by pulling them up inside.

We often advise people to make a rough template of the chandelier you are interested in. No art skills needed - a cereal box and a pair of scissors will do. You can then hang this in the space (using string or Sellotape) and see what you think.
